Before the series started, Mami was from a normal family--probably a well off family by how her apartment is furnished in the edited blue-ray disc version and her formal way of speaking. Not much is really known about her background. However, one day her life changed when she was with her parents when there was a fatal car crash.

Mami's parents died and Mami nearly did. The only thing that saved her was a small white creature called Kyubey. Kyubey granted her wish not to die there. In return, Mami Tomoe would become a magical girl. What does that mean? Roughly, she would spend the rest of her newly-given life chases down witches: horrible creatures that feed off of human suffering. If magical girls are created out of wishes then witches are created out of curses.

For a while, it seems, after the accident Mami spent her time as a magical girl hunting witches. Then, on the day when Homura Akemi was released from the hospital things go wrong.

This is the first time Mami meets Madoka Kaname, Madoka eventually contracts with Kyubey. They go about fighting witches together for about a week. Then Homura manages to attract the attention of a witch who lures her into its barrier: an alternate dimension where the witch lives. Madoka and Mami kill the witch before Homura is killed by it.

The two let Homura into the world of magical girls without forcing her into becoming one. Eventually a powerful witch called Walpurgisnacht comes to the area. It also deserves special mention that Mami seemed to know this was happening and was preparing for it. Since Mami and Madoka are the only magical girls in the area they are the ones who have to kill it before Walpurgisnacht destroys the entire city. However, Mami dies first then Madoka is killed not long after. This leads Homura to contract with Kyubey wishing that she could start over.

And so the month Mami spent fighting alongside Madoka was reset. The next time around it happened similarly. Mami taught Homura, though, how to use her new-found time powers combined with explosives. Mami didn't seem to mind having two magical girls with her. Yet, again Mami dies first against Walpurgisnacht. Madoka and Homura don't fair any better. The timeline is reset.

The next time Sayaka Miki, Madoka's friend, is contracted as well and Kyoko Sakura comes to the town. Five magical girls might have been able to stand up to Walpurgisnacht but before the witch came tragedy struck. Sayaka turned into a witch herself after her friend, Hitomi, confessed her love to musician that Sayaka used her wish to save.

Becoming a witch is the fate of all magical girls that don't die in battle is what. Kyoko, Madoka, Mami, and Homura learn this after they fight and kill the witch that Sayaka became. Kyoko is angry at this, Madoka starts to cry, and Homura is saddened. Mami takes it the worst. How? She decides the only solution is to kill the three other magical girls and commit suicide. She immobilizes Homura to keep her from using her time magic. Then Mami shoots Kyoko point blank in the chest--killing her instantly. Turning on Homura, she is clearly very upset. She is about to kill Homura when Madoka suddenly shoots her in the head. Homura and Madoka fight Walpurgisnacht, nearly die, vow to become witches, then the timeline is reset once again.

In the fourth timeline Mami's fate and her influence in it is unknown. It is possible what happened to her in the fifth timeline happened to her in the fourth. (To be explained shortly.)

In the fifth timeline--which is where the anime starts--Mami finds Sayaka and Madoka in a witch's lair. They had found themselves trapped after trying to save Kyubey from being killed by Homura. Mami saves the two from the witch's minions but the witch itself managed to escape. Homura shortly after appears. Mami tells her that she can have the witch but Homura refuses, saying she's there for something else. Mami thinks that's an invitation to fight and tells Homura that she's not going to fight her in front of the two girls. Homura leaves.

Mami brings them back to her apartment after she explained that she was a magical girl. She gives Sayaka and Madoka a quick rundown of a magical girl is, what a magical girl does, and how one becomes a magical girl. Noting that Kyubey chose the two Mami invites them along to hunt witches with her so they can find out what being a magical girl is like for themselves.

This leads the three into another lair of the same witch that Madoka and Sayaka found themselves in from before. Mami manages to kill the witch with smooth efficiency, gaining the "egg" of the witch. Some witches drop "Grief Seeds" which are sought after by magical girls. Mami uses this Grief Seed to purify her Soul Gem, the source of a magical's girl power. Then she tosses the Grief Seed to Homura, saying that she can have the rest of the energy in it. Homura gives it back and gives a cryptic warning before leaving.

A few days later Homura finds Mami alone. Homura chides her for bringing Sayaka and Madoka into the magical girl world. Mami is offended, saying that Kyubey did not her. Then the discussion turns to the great potential Madoka has. Homura is firmly against Madoka becoming a magical girl. Mami assumes it's because that would make Madoka a powerful rival. When the conversation comes to an end, Mami tells Homura that she never wants to see her again.

Later, Sayaka and Madoka find a Grief Seed near a hospital. Sayaka stays with Kyuubey so that when the barrier does go up Mami could find the Grief Seed while Madoka runs to find Mami. They enter the barrier only to be confronted by Homura. Homura warns Mami that she'll fight the witch and that Mami should just leave. Mami, who's patience was running thin, tied Homura up. She said that Homura could just stay there while Mami fought the witch. Even if Homura told them not to go Mami left with Madoka in tow.

Madoka confides in Mami while they walk to the center of the barrier where the witch, Kyubey, and Sayaka are. Madoka tells her that she finds herself to be useless but if she became a magical girl like Mami then she could finally of be some use to the world. Mami warns her that a magical girl's life is hard. Madoka says she doesn't care and that she wants to be as good as Mami is one day. Even if Mami tells her that she shouldn't be anyone's role model, Mami eventually relents. She asks Madoka if she would fight by her side if she contracts with Kyubey. Madoka tells her that, yes, she would.

Mami is overcome with emotion, crying that she finally had someone to share life with. She makes Madoka promise that once the witch was dead she would contract and if Madoka couldn't find a wish then she could wish for a cake. Even if Madoka didn't find the last part funny, Mami starts fighting the witch's minions with renewed purpose.

Then they get to the center of the barrier with the witch. Mami fights a small doll-like witch with all her might and using all her energy. She fights brashly and without any sense of tactics. Then the witch transforms into it's true self: a giant worm-like creature. Then it bites off Mami's head before eating the rest of her body. Sayaka and Madoka are horrified. Homura, freed by Mami's death, comes and kills the witch. Thus ends the fifth timeline for Mami Tomoe.

Personality: If it were up to Mami, everyone would think she's perfect. She plays the role of being almost perfect well. Mami's default expression is a tranquil one with a calm smile. She acts like a well-groomed young lady. Someone who doesn't mind the duties of being either a magical girl or a student. As a normal girl Mami keeps her distance to other people but always is polite and formal. As a magical girl she's more direct. Fighting witches takes more energy than going to school, after all, and she keeps her normal fighting style quick with a focused mind.

What puts Mami apart from most other magical girls is her dedication to fighting witches as a moral obligation: she will not only fight a witch but also their minions so they don't ensnare unwary humans. Fighting a minion doesn't give her any reward but she does so anyway even if that forces her to be more careful about her magical reserves. The fact that she's kept her territory for a long time is a testament to her fighting ability and mental discipline.

Mami doesn't turn away help if the other person is willing to accept her's. Magical girls normally don't team up yet Mami isn't against it if the other parties are willing. She seems to delight in being a mentor to younger magical girls such as Sayaka and Madoka: inviting them to her spacious apartment, teaching them the basics, and even taking them on witch hunts so they could make an informed decision about becoming magical girls. Mami certainly didn't have to explain anything or she could have left them in the witch's lair to be killed by the minions. Many other magical girls might have done just that.

This role of a calm mentor, of a protector, of a just hero is one that Mami prefers. She wears it well--that is, until someone finally gets past her defenses to actually know her.

Underneath her mentoring and her politely calm demeanor lies a very lonely person. Being a magical girl has forced Mami to give up most things in her life including friends, dating, and a general social life. She can't let normal humans get to know her because that would only put them in the dangerous world of the witches or make them a target for rival magical girls. The only people Mami can let down her barriers around are other magical girls yet that isn't possible, either. For the most part they would take advantage of that. Mami knows that so until she met Madoka, she kept her loneliness inside.

Since her contract was made from a desperate wanting to not die alone when she does manage to let someone know just how lonely she is? Mami isn't willing to let that person out of her life. This makes her protective at her best and a little bit obsessive at her worst. It also led to her death in at least one timeline. Showing off for Madoka against a witch--not to mention not letting Homura help or hearing out what she had to say--led to Mami dying against said witch. Her fear of dying alone drives her carefulness in battle and when she wasn't afraid of being alone she just wasn't careful which is a fatal mistake for a magical girl to make.

Even deeper, Mami's almost obsession with her duties as a magical girl blinds her to many of the truths of a magical girl's true nature. When she learns these her mind snaps. Her discipline and duty turn against the people who trust her most because when it comes down to it Mami isn't afraid to kill or hurt someone she's let into her life if she thinks that's for the best. If shooting one of her fellow magical girls dead means they won't turn to despair and hurt innocent humans? So be it, Mami will do so. She may be emotionally torn on the issue but her sense of duty will win out every time.

In all, Mami Tomoe is a very dutiful young woman who may seem like she's living a charmed life but in reality she's a lonely person who's trying to survive by clinging on to an illusion of what being a magical girl means.

Other: I'll be taking Mami from after her meeting with Sayaka and Madoka but before her death.

First Person (entry type): Today was rather interesting. I usually head to the local mall for shopping purposes only or to eat a meal at a fast food restaurant. Yes, I know it's an unhealthy habit but it's one that I only rarely indulge: I usually make my own meals at my apartment. I've heard that I'm rather good at cooking but that's beside the point, really. As I was saying I went to the mall today.

A pair of underclassmen had fallen into trouble. Both of them had fallen on the wrong side of the new transfer student. I'm not sure what exactly this transfer student wanted from them and her behavior doesn't make any sense to me. I managed to persuade her to leave before any harm came to anyone. The two underclassmen seemed quite happy for my help, if I can say that.

It seems I have two new study partners, in any case. As their upperclassman it's my duty to make sure they at least have a chance. Kaname Madoka and Miki Sayaka... Good thing I was walking by when I was. This probably is the start of something great.

Third Person: It was nearly dark and Mami was searching for a witch near a busy street. Her Soul Gem glows golden in her hands as she walks down alleyways. Her ears have been attuned to the news lately and several violent crimes have happened near this particular street: attempted murders all of them. Mami's already noted in her head that the witch must be of a particular violent sort. Some other witches preferred suicides over such violent crimes.

Her shoes click against the dirty cement of the alleyway. As the Soul Gem dims, Mami just gives a slightly disappointed sigh. She should have known. It wasn't that surprising that the witch would move on. They were afraid of being caught; Mami might not like it but most witches liked to flee.

The night wasn't over. There were several bars with darkened corners that this witch may prefer, after all. As much as it was tempting to call it a night and return to the apartment...well. The apartment was still empty. The walls may have been filled with knickknacks and it's large rooms were warmly decorated but Mami knew that the silence wouldn't do her any good. The silence plus the knowledge that returning would probably sentence another helpless human to death--

No, Mami couldn't let that happen. So she adjusts her school bag's strap on her shoulder and turns around in the alleyway. She has a job to do, after all, even if nobody notices.
